The Springbank 2002 17-Year-Old Madeira Wood is a distinguished single malt Scotch whisky that showcases the distillery's innovative approach to maturation. This expression underwent an initial maturation of 14 years in a combination of rum and bourbon barrels, followed by a 3-year finishing period in fresh Madeira hogsheads, resulting in a complex and layered flavor profile.
Tasting Notes
NOSE:
The aroma presents a distinctive funkiness with prominent notes of orange, peaches and cream, freshly baked macaroons, and guava. Underlying these are warm, dark spices such as clove and cinnamon, complemented by hints of aged balsamic and molasses. Additional layers include industrial funk, smoky coffee, zesty barley, Greek yogurt, smoked salt, and subtle nuances of chicken fat and dill.
TASTE:
The palate is characterized by flavors of dark forest fruits, accompanied by a creamy texture. Despite the relatively moderate ABV, the alcohol presence is notable, contributing to a slight dryness.
FINISH:
The finish is medium in length, with lingering notes of spices and a subtle sweetness.
