Description
Sasanokawa Pure Malt is a carefully crafted Japanese blended malt ("pure malt") whisky from Sasanokawa Shuzo Co., distilled at Asaka Distillery in Fukushima. Founded in 1946, Sasanokawa draws on centuries of sake-brewing heritage to bring an artisanal approach to whisky. This expression combines two unpeated malt whiskies and one peated malt whisky, each aged for at least five years in U.S. bourbon barrels. One of the unpeated malts is then finished in Spanish sherry casks, enriching the blend with depth and elegance. The spirit is bottled at 48% ABV, aiming for balance between richness, softness, and a touch of smoky intrigue.
Tasting Notes
NOSE:
Cream-brûlée sweetness, caramelized sugar, light orchard fruit (pear, apple), vanilla, with distant smoke and a hint of old oak and sherry. Subtle herbal and yeasty notes add complexity.
TASTE:
Soft, smooth entry; honey, vanilla and malt take the lead; dried fruit (cherry/dark fruit) from the sherry finish; smoke shows up underneath, restrained but noticeable. Oak spice and gentle nutty tones.
FINISH:
Long, warming, with lingering sweetness and smoke; the sherry influence remains with dried fruit and a touch of bitterness from oak; softly herbal or smoky underside that persists without overwhelming.
