Description

Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard is a family‐owned estate in Chassagne‐Montrachet, Burgundy, founded in 1985 (from holdings of Gagnard-Delagrange). The Chassagne-Montrachet Blanc from this domaine is a Village‐level Chardonnay that draws from several old vines (some planted between the 1960s and 1980s) spread across plots with limestone, clay-limestone and stone/stony soils, often on southeast exposures. The wine is barrel fermented (native yeasts), undergoing malolactic fermentation, and aged for many months in oak, with a portion of new oak to provide structure and complexity.

Tasting Notes

NOSE:
White orchard fruit (apple, pear), citrus zest (lemon, lime), sometimes hints of white flowers. Also subtle oak influence: vanilla, light toast, butter, and sometimes petrol or rosemary oil in more developed examples.

TASTE:
Balanced acidity, a medium to somewhat fuller body compared to more austere Chardonnays. Good minerality, a tension in the finish, richness and texture from oak, but not overwhelmed by it. Often notes of stone fruits, citrus, possibly some honey or creamy texture, depending on vintage.

FINISH:
Clean, dry, mineral-tinged with lingering freshness. Oak adds complexity (spice, toasty notes) but doesn’t dominate.
