Description
A bold, theatrical Islay single malt released under the Darkness range — a line of intensely sherried finishes matured in small Oloroso “octave” casks to amplify sherry influence and natural colour. This bottling is an unnamed Islay matured for 32 years and given a short, powerful finishing period in a custom-made Oloroso octave; it’s presented at ≈57.7% ABV in a 500 ml limited release. The finish in tiny sherry casks is Darkness’ signature: high surface-area contact gives concentrated toffee, dried fruit and dark chocolate notes while retaining the coastal, tarry Islay character.
Tasting Notes
NOSE:
Big, old-wood depth with coastal tar and iodine undergrowth; then a rush of sherried richness — chewy toffee, dark raisins and cocoa powder. A faint medicinal sea-spray and molasses sweetness peek through.
TASTE:
Concentrated, chewy mouthfeel: dense dark fruit (black cherry, dried figs), sticky toffee and melted dark chocolate layered over the classic Islay peat — oily smoke, leather and a saline mineral backbone. The octave Oloroso influence brings candied orange pith and roasted nuts into the mix.
FINISH:
Long, warming and slightly drying: bitter cocoa, lingering peat embers and an echo of spiced oak. The sherry octave leaves a persistent, chewy sweetness that balances the maritime smoke.
