Description
Darkness’ Highland 19 Year Old — Oloroso Cask Finish is a limited, age-stated single malt from a Highland distillery, matured for 19 years and then finished in Oloroso sherry casks (often smaller “octave” casks for the Darkness range). The concept: long maturation to develop depth, with a concentrated sherry finish to add rich dried-fruit and nutty complexity. Darkness releases are typically bottled at a relatively high strength to preserve intensity; bottle counts are usually small, making these expressions collectible.
Tasting Notes
NOSE:
Candied orange peel, sultanas and raisins, warm treacle and toffee, then cedar, polished leather and a discreet honeyed malt. A background of tobacco leaf and mild tobacco-box perfume; baked fig and toasted almond appear with time.
TASTE:
Oily and rounded — molasses, black cherry compote, dark chocolate and sticky toffee. The Oloroso influence brings walnut, marzipan and baking spice (clove, cinnamon). Oak tannin is present but well integrated after 19 years; a gentle bitter-dark cocoa undercurrent balances the sweetness.
FINISH:
Long, warming and slightly drying: lingering dried fruit, toasted oak spice, cocoa dust and a last citrus oil lift. The aftertaste keeps a soft leathery, nutty echo rather than aggressive bitterness.
