Castello di Meleto’s Vigna Casi Riserva is a Sangiovese-based wine from the Chianti Classico DOCG in Tuscany. The grapes come from the Casi vineyard(s), planted around 1990-1995, at about 400 meters above sea level.

Vinification involves a hand harvest, de-stemmed grapes, spontaneous alcoholic fermentation in large wooden casks (53 hl), followed by extended maceration on the skins (20-25 days), then malolactic fermentation. Aging is split: roughly half in Slavonian oak barrels (18 months) and the other half in barriques of second/third use.

The style is Riserva, meaning more ageing, more structure, more depth relative to standard Chianti Classico. Also, Castello di Meleto uses soils like “galestro” (slate/schist) and clay: contributing minerality, firmness, and complexity.

Tasting Notes

COLOR:
Bright ruby-porpora with hues of garnet appearing as it ages.

NOSE:
Notes of violet, cherries and mixed red and dark berries. There are spicy hints (sweet spices, perhaps clove or vanilla), possibly some herbal / dried leaf or earthy tones. With fuller bottle age, leather, tobacco, or underbrush may emerge.

TASTE:
Medium to full body. Good acidity (typical of Chianti Classico) balanced with soft, round tannins. Fruit tends toward cherry (both sour or black cherry), berry compote, maybe plum, with secondary spice, and a slight mineral edge. The oak is present but usually not overwhelming (second/third use barrels).

FINISH:
Finish is long and intense.

Because of its structure, acidity, tannin, and flavour profile, this wine pairs well with a variety of richer Tuscan or Italian dishes:

Red meats: grilled or roasted beef, lamb chops, pork with herbs.

Game: wild boar, venison, duck, particularly with sauces or reductions.

Hearty pasta dishes: Bolognese or ragù, lasagne, tagliatelle with meat sauce.

Aged cheeses: pecorino, aged Parmesan, other firm cheeses with character.

Tuscan classics / regional: dishes with mushrooms, grilled vegetables, roasted herbs; also tomato-based dishes but those with meat or richness to match the wine.
