Founded in 1982 by Jim Clendenen in Santa Maria, California, Au Bon Climat has long specialized in Burgundian‑style Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the Pacific‑influenced vineyards of Santa Barbara County. Their flagship Pinot Noir draws fruit primarily from premier sites such as Bien Nacido, Le Bon Climat, Los Alamos, Sanford & Benedict, and others across Santa Maria Valley and Sta. Rita Hills. Crafted in open‑top fermenters with gentle manual punch‑downs, aged in François Frères French oak (around 8–12 months), this wine balances Old‑World restraint with New‑World fruit purity.

Tasting Notes

COLOR:
Bright ruby‑red, with a translucent edge typical of youthful Pinot Noir.

NOSE:
Lifted red fruit—hibiscus, strawberry, red currant, blueberry and cranberry—followed by subtle spice (clove/anise), bay leaf, white pepper, sage, and a mineral hint of wet stone.

TASTE:
Light to medium-bodied with juicy but structured acidity; flavors of red and dark berry—plum, cherry, cranberry—intertwined with hints of red licorice, tea leaf, sage, and gentle oak spice. Tannins are plush yet refined, acidity lively, with a mineral‑tinged finish.

FINISH:
Smooth and balanced, with lingering bright fruit and earth‑driven spice. Keeps freshness for several years; likely develops savory and tertiary notes if cellared for 4–7 years.
