Description

Anthonij Rupert Optima is a signature premium Bordeaux‑style red blend from South Africa’s L’Ormarins Estate in Franschhoek (plus sourcing from Darling for some vintages). It’s Cabernet-Franc–driven, usually blended with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon (plus often a dash of Petit Verdot). Optima is crafted with meticulous vineyard practices—hand‑sorting and optical sorting—and aged extensively in French oak (commonly 18–20 months, around 30–35% new oak), followed by bottle maturation before release.

Tasting Notes

NOSE:
A complex interplay of dark berries—blackberry, blackcurrant, plum—with layered notes of fruitcake, cedar, cocoa, baking spice, dried lavender or violet perfume.

TASTE:
Plush, silky and velvety texture. Flavours of cassis, hedgerow fruit, cocoa, cedar, spice, tobacco or cigar box, even subtle pencil shavings or forest-floor hints in older bottles.

FINISH:
Balanced and seamless, combining ripe fruit and refined oak with freshness and a long dry finish.

Red meat: Grilled or roasted beef (sirloin, tenderloin), lamb (rack or tagine), game. Its tannins and fruit depth stand up especially to peppercorn‑sauced steak or lamb tagine.
